Shama Futehally

Shama Futehally died this week after a long illness; she was only 52. I remember her not just for her books–Tara Lane, Reaching Bombay Central, translations, children’s stories–but for her kindness and generosity, not always common traits among writers. She taught English; she was a civil servant; she translated Meera’s bhajans; she was so much more than this brief list can indicate.
