Abraham Eraly’s Introduction to The Mughal Throne impresses Edward Luce, especially when Eraly writes, “In every other major civilisation the past has died so that the future could be born. But India seems to be killing the future so that the past can live on.” But, says Luce, Eraly promises serious history and delivers merely a view through the “keyhole of the bedchamber”. The Daily Telegraph, meanwhile, wants more maps and illustrations.
