The Babu saw a private screening of Anand Patwardhan’s documentary War and Peace and found the Censor Board’s attempts to muzzle the filmmaker just as inexplicable as the Mumbai High Court, fortunately, did. An official ban was never placed on the film, but the Board attempted to block private screenings and suggested several cuts. These were some of their suggestions: delete references to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, delete a sequence that featured a Dalit leader, delete sequences that featured footage of India’s prime minister and president, and delete all references to the defence scandal that Tehelka broke and that brought the website down. Free speech won out, just about, this time.
