Add your thoughtWas Shafique-ur-Rehman Barq, BSP member of Parliament, justified in walking out during the singing of the National Song?
Nilanjana Roy digs into Bamkimchandra's Ananda Math, whence the Song has been taken and discusses how it was incorporated as the National Song by our leaders. There is a difference between the National Anthem and the National Song, and they their treatment can be differed. Nilanjana Roy expresses the difference in a meticulous way considering all the dynamics of the equation. A must read for an enlightened view of how to look at these situations, and not create an useless chaos by interpretting things from an obnoxiously one-sided religion-based perceptive.s here...
I have to disagree - I, in my many years now, in the US - have met students from all over the world - while the Indian education system may lack some of the "creative" encouragement that Nilanjana laments about - Indian students and professionals are incredibly competent - in fact, I have yet to come across an incompetent Indian professional - be it A salesman at a grocery store, or in a more professional setting - I think Indians are incredibly good at thinking on their feet. Indian entrepreneurs - yes, those very same engineers , whose lack of creativity , Nilanjana, laments about, have founded a gazillion successful companies, both in India and abroad - if that's not creativity at work, I don't know what is. In a recent list of the top 10 eLearning companies, 3 were from India! There is always room to improve, but our Indian education system is definitely doing something right in fostering rigor of thought and creativity.

To be completely honest, I did not think Achebe's writing itself was all that wonderful (but then again, I was introduced to it as an ungrateful student in an over-priviliged, elitist environment). I appreciate, however, his contribution to literature in that he brought light to bear (oh nom here come the hackneyed heart of darkness references!) on a part of the world that the English speaking community was not entirely familiar with. I suppose pioneers are always condemned, on some level, for the simplicity of the tools they use to create the roads that others will travel down later, in swankier cars.

Nilanjana Roy's review of Wave - the story of death, survival and grief - propels me to the bookstore. Nobody needs to know the depth of emotional horror Sonali Deraniyagala has experienced, yet through her journey we can understand a little more of the human condition. The power of books.
